Case Study

Team Project Free-Rider Problem

A four-person student team is working on a major project where the final grade is shared equally. One member, Alex, frequently misses meetings and contributes minimal, low-quality work, knowing the other three members are high-achievers and will likely complete the project to a high standard to protect their own grades. Analyze this situation from the perspective of aligning individual incentives with group success. Propose a system of rules and consequences the team could have established at the outset to discourage this behavior and explain the principles that make your proposed system effective.
