Test et al. (2014) - Transition to adulthood: Rigor, Relevance, and Relationships

Test et al. (2014) highlight that many autistic adolescents face difficulty with the transition to adulthood due to insufficient preparation.

They specifically highlight three areas of concern - rigor, relevance, and relationships

  1. Rigor- rigor has to do with providing academically challenging curriculums
  2. Relevance - relevance has to do with teaching content that is relevant and applicable to real life situations and experiences
  3. Relationships - in order to facilitate proper transition, it is important to foster positive relationships with educators, peers, and community members

The authors argue that all of these components contribute to successful transition for autistic youth. They argue that these components are interconnected and all contribute to one another.
