The Allegory of Bayazid Bastami and the Limitations of Philosophy in Asrar Nameh

In Section 7 of Attar's Asrar Nameh, an allegory featuring the Sufi master Bayazid Bastami illustrates the limitations of philosophical reasoning (عقل فلسفی) in understanding divine realities. When a novice questions the physical structure and causes of the universe, asking 'why' the heavens and earth are as they are, Bayazid responds that seeking causal explanations (علت) leads one away from the true path of faith. The narrative emphasizes that religion and mystical truth require submission (تسلیم) rather than philosophical interrogation into the 'why' and 'how' of God's creation.
