The Allegory of Bu'l-Fash Chaghani and the Setting Sun in Asrar Nameh

In Section 11 of Fariduddin Attar's 'Asrar Nameh' (The Book of Secrets), the parable of Bu'l-Fash Chaghani serves as an allegory for the urgency of spiritual striving and the perils of spiritual heedlessness (ghaflah). The traveler who falls asleep in the plain and fails to drive his donkey before the sun sets represents an individual squandering their finite earthly life. In Sufi literature, the donkey often symbolizes the lower self (nafs) or physical body that must be actively guided and driven toward spiritual realization. The setting sun signifies the end of one's lifespan; failing to progress before it sets leaves the soul stranded in the darkness of ignorance and missed opportunity.
