In this section of Attar's Mosibat Nameh, Sultan Mahmud asks his wise master, Sadid Anbari, to explain the Quranic verse stating that God honors whom He wills and humbles whom He wills (Quran 3:26). The master responds that the verse reflects their respective states: the master possesses true honor ('ezz) because he is content with a simple life (a clay pot and a straw mat) representing the spiritual whole (kull), while the king experiences humiliation (dholl) because he is bound to worldly desires (juzw) and is never satisfied despite his vast empire. This allegory illustrates the Sufi concepts of contentment (qana'ah) and spiritual freedom as the source of true honor, contrasted with the poverty of worldly ambition.
