In Section 36 of Jami's Subhat al-Abrar (from the Haft Awrang), the satirical story of the effeminate man falling successively through a skylight, a lookout, a lower house, a cellar, and finally into a well serves as an allegory for the moral and spiritual descent of the base soul (nafs). Lacking firm spiritual footing—humorously highlighted by his cry that the house 'has no floor'—the weak-willed individual is led by low ambitions (hemmat-e faroumayeh) through successive levels of degradation, leading to ultimate ruin.
