The Allegory of Sultan Mahmud and the Old Gleaner in Attar's Mosibat Nameh
This allegory from Attar's Mosibat Nameh depicts Sultan Mahmud meeting an old man carrying a sack of wheat. The old man insists on gleaning only from land that does not belong to the sultan to ensure his family eats lawful (halal) sustenance, avoiding the spiritual danger of usurped or royal property. The tale highlights the Sufi themes of moral integrity, avoidance of unlawful wealth, and the spiritual superiority of the righteous poor over rulers.
