The Allegory of the Dervish's Patched Hat in Asrar Nameh
In this allegory from Attar's Asrar Nameh, a dervish wearing a patched, ragged hat is mockingly asked its price by an onlooker. The dervish responds that he would not sell a single thread of it for the entirety of both worlds. The patched hat symbolizes the spiritual poverty (faqr) and humility cultivated on the Sufi path. While the hat appears worthless to the worldly eye, the dervish knows its infinite inner value, emphasizing the profound contrast between outward material appearance and true inward spiritual worth.
