The Allegory of the Discrepancy Between Claims and Spiritual States in Section 87 of the Masnavi, Book Five
In Rumi's Masnavi, Book Five, Section 87, the narrative of the jealous wife, the master, and the maidservant serves as an allegory for the profound discrepancy between verbal claims and one's actual spiritual state (hal). Rumi uses the Quranic reference to the infidels who admit that God created the heavens and the earth yet continue to worship stone idols to illustrate how intellectual or verbal assertion of truth is meaningless if not accompanied by a corresponding inner state and action. This section highlights that true faith and knowledge must penetrate the soul and transform behavior; otherwise, the claim of belief remains a superficial contradiction, akin to a watchful intellect being easily bypassed by divine decree or personal desire.
