The Allegory of the Famine of Rey and the Collapse of Material Causes in Hadiqat al-Haqiqah
In Section 30 of 'Hadiqat al-Haqiqah', Sanai uses the horrific depiction of a severe famine in the city of Rey—where social order disintegrates and mothers consume their own children—as a powerful allegory for the collapse of material relations and secondary causes ('asbab'). When a distressed mystic begs the poet to pray for the relief of the famine, the poet refuses, advising him to let the hardship continue. This response highlights a core Sufi theme: extreme tribulation strips away worldly illusions, demonstrating that in the material realm ('saray-e basich'), no created being can truly support another ('hich kas nist ich kas ra hich'). The destruction of material safety forces the soul to recognize its absolute, unmediated dependence on the Divine.
