In Section 23 of Jami's Silsilat al-Dhahab (Haft Awrang), the poet presents a two-part allegory to illustrate the hypocrisy of superficial spiritual leaders (discussed in Section 22). First, he describes a confectioner who makes almond sweets (lawzinaj) out of garlic; while the outward shape suggests sweetness, the smell and taste reveal the bitter truth. Second, he describes a terrible singer whose harsh, coughing voice destroys the joy of spiritual listening (sama). These parables symbolize fake Sufi masters whose outward appearance of piety masks their inner corruption and whose performative worship repels true seekers.
