Section 23 - Parable

Original content

English translation

When the wretched almond-pastry maker, out of spite, Makes the filling of the almond-pastry out of garlic, The shape of the pastry cries out loudly: 'I am free of garlic and its smell.' But its filling says through taste and smell: 'Look at the pastry's filling and speak no nonsense.' When the spiritual discourses reach their end, The Sheikh rests from conversation. They call out to a wretched singer, To begin the veil of mystical music (Sama). A bad-voiced one stirs from a corner, A melody-maker, a song-composer. A melody-maker who has taken the tambourine in hand, His melody comes out out-of-tune. Because phlegm so chokes his throat, He coughs instead of producing vocal trills. His throat, with the agonizing scratchy sound, Cuts the neck of aesthetic taste with a saw. When the singer's song, in such a manner, Grew warm, a Sufi immediately leapt up. Others also joined in agreement, Drinking wine from the cup of agreement. One running from the left, one from the right, Old and young formed a circle around them. Not one having any genuine acceptance in their heart, Stamping their feet, but without any principles. All dancing to the sound of the reed-flute and tambourine, But dancing towards deficiency.
