عارفی گفت هر که یارم شد
خصم جان امیدوارم شد

جوهر من مناسب خود یافت
رویم از حق به جانب خود تافت

مرد حق زان که را بتر داند
که دلش را ز حق بگرداند

وان که با من ز دشمنی زد دم
دوستدار من اوست در عالم

رویم از خود بتافت در حق کرد
قبله ام وجه حق مطلق کرد

که ازان به به پیش عاشق زار
که کند روی او به جانب یار

دشمنان خدا به مذهب من
دوستانند و دوستان دشمن

تا تو در بند نفس وسواسی
دشمن خود ز دوست نشناسی

نیست بر رهروان ستمگاره
هیچ دشمن ز نفس اماره

English translation

A mystic said: "Whoever became my friend, Became the enemy of my hopeful soul. He found my essence agreeable to his own, And turned my face away from the Truth toward himself. Whom does the man of Truth consider worse than the one Who turns his heart away from the Truth? And he who breathed hostility toward me, He is my true friend in the world. He turned my face away from himself and toward the Truth, And made the face of the Absolute Truth my Qibla. For what is better to a helpless lover Than someone who turns his face toward the Beloved? By God, in my religion, enemies Are friends, and friends are enemies. As long as you are trapped by the whispering ego, You will not distinguish your enemy from a friend. There is no enemy more oppressive to the wayfarers Than the commanding ego."
