Section 33 - The Meeting of the Experienced Old Man with the Newly Arrived Youth

Original content

English translation

A youth from among the wayfarers of the path Became a companion to an experienced old man. The old man was like the sun, rich in essence, And that youth followed behind him like a shadow. They were traversing the road when suddenly A path full of water and mud appeared. The old man stepped forward ecstatically, While the youth stood behind, sullen, Lest in the midst of it His garment or footwear should become soiled with mud. When the old man saw this, he said, 'Hey! You are not a donkey, how long this fear of water and mud? How long will you guard your garment from the mud? Guard your heart, O heedless-hearted one! From mud and water, a garment can be washed, So that it becomes cleaner than the first time; But when the heart is soiled by heedlessness, Your blood will trickle from your eyes.'
