English translation

O You whose manifestation is harmonious with hiddenness, And O You whose emergence is intimate with concealment. You are Unique, yet the reference of all numbers; You are One, yet the gatherer of opposites. You are the First, and You have no beginning; You are the Last, and You have no end. You are apparent with the perfection of oneness; You are hidden with an abundance of visibility. You are secure from change and alteration; You are free from localization and transformation. Your essence in the pavilions of majesty, From eternity without beginning to eternity without end, is in one manner. Over You there is no commander or forbidder; You do whatever You wish. Neither does error prevent Your gift, Nor does devotion repel Your affliction. For the wrongdoers, Your gift is a trap; With the devoted, Your affliction is a fulfillment. What is the trap? The deception of rank and beauty. What is the fulfillment? The promise of proximity and union. O You, by whose door a world has achieved its fulfillment, I seek fulfillment, not a trap, from Your door. Do not place a trap in my path moment by moment, So that I may take a step towards my fulfillment. Show me a path to Your own proximity, Open a door in the sanctuary of my heart. Absent from myself, grant me a presence; Bring me to joy and grant a light. O how many a fire-worshipper with wind in hand (empty-handed), Has spent a lifetime sitting in the dust of the temple, Has been back-to-back with firewood for years, To kindle the fire of Zoroaster, Has bent his stature every moment in the service of the Magi, Like the cross of the Christian. His face black from the fire of the temple, Himself ruined by ugly deeds. Not only his face and mind dark from it, From head to foot in one manner from it. Suddenly a lightning of mercy has struck, His heart freed from infidelity and darkness. Become, with the attraction of special grace, The bird of his soul released from the trap of polytheism. Although I am bound in the fetters of existence, I swear to You by You, That consider me as one such person, Do not leave the darkness of a doubt in my heart. Place my baggage in the abode of the kingdom of religion, Give me a place in the country of certainty. Make me averse to whatever is other than You, Drown me in light from foot to crown. Give me eyes worthy of Your sight, A soul as a resting place for Your secrets. How long shall I be from my own self-worship, Bound in the narrowness of my own existence? Deliver me from the disgrace of this narrowness, Bring me to the color of colorlessness. The bird of my ambition flies audaciously, In the gardens of hope from branch to branch, That I may pick a seed from Your roof, Or see a sign of Your name. Before I pack my bags from the world, Keep me head-high with the crown of poverty. Towards You I have hastened many times, I have found no burden but the burden of the heart. Since my back became heavy from the burden of the heart, My back became curled like the tail of dogs. I assumed myself that I am worse than dogs, Do not drive me out from the circle of dogs. Who am I to be with You in the depth of the cave, A companion like the Companions of the Cave? When would I fear if I sit behind, From the row of friends, is this not enough for me, That like a dog, although I am full of evil and disgrace, I am stretching my forelegs at Your door. My life was a white scroll, In the hand of a black-doer like me. For the blackening of that letter, My heart was the inkwell, my tongue the pen. For a time I have wielded the pen in it, I have inscribed from error and flaw. No one will find a written line in it, That does not contain a displeasure within it. There is not a letter in it safe from crookedness, Like Aleph? Nay, all crooked like Kaf. O You before whom my hidden secret Is manifest, until when shall I read To You this letter of distress, When You know it letter by letter? When the hand of the champion of death Rolls up this letter of error and flaw, First wash its page with the water of His forgiveness, Then with the pen of generosity that is in Your hand, Write a draft for my freedom, And write a line of salvation from errors. Do not approve of my shame from that page, "The day We will fold the heaven like the folding of a [written] sheet."
