روزی از روزها کلیم خدا
که زدی گام در حریم وفا

در شبانی به ره نهاد قدم
بره ای کرد ناگه از رمه رم

بره هر سو دوان و او در پی
کرد بسیار کوه و هامون طی

آخرش سست شد ز سختی رگ
دست و پا سوده باز ماند ز تگ

موسی او را گرفت و پیش نشاند
اشک رحمت به روی خویش فشاند

خوی او از غضب نگشت درشت
نرم نرمش کشید دست به پشت

کین رمیدن پی چه بود آخر
زین دویدن تو را چه سود آخر

کوشش من که در قفای تو بود
نیز برای خود از برای تو بود

گر تو را با تو واگذاشتمی
لطف خویش از تو بازداشتمی

بهر گرگ و پلنگ خون آشام
طعمه چاشت می شدی یا شام

آنگهش جا به گردن خود کرد
عزم رفتن به سوی مقصد کرد

چون ندیدش ز رنج قوت تن
بار او را گرفت بر گردن

نیست در وقت ناخوشی و خوشی
هیچ کاری فزون ز بارکشی

بارکش باش تا به روز شمار
در سرای سرور یابی بار

حق تعالی چو در شبانی او
دید آیین مهربانی او

گفت با قدسیان کروبی
آن که خلقش بود بدین خوبی

شاید ار قدر او بلند شود
در جهان شاه ارجمند شود

بر سر خلق سروریش دهند
ره به کوی پیمبریش دهند

همه در سایه اش بیاسایند
سایه وش سر به پای او سایند

English translation

One day, the Interlocutor of God (Moses), Who stepped in the sanctuary of loyalty, Set foot on the path of shepherding; Suddenly, a lamb ran away from the flock. The lamb running in every direction, and he in pursuit, Traversed many mountains and plains. Finally, its veins weakened from the hardship, Its limbs worn out, it ceased running. Moses took it and placed it before him, He shed tears of mercy upon his own face. His temperament did not grow harsh from anger, Very gently, he stroked its back. Saying, 'What was this fleeing for, after all? What benefit is there for you in this running, after all? My effort, which was in pursuit of you, Was not for myself, it was for you. If I had left you to yourself, If I had withheld my grace from you, For the bloodthirsty wolf and leopard, You would have become a morning meal or dinner.' Then, he placed it on his own shoulders, And resolved to go towards his destination. Since he saw it had no bodily strength left from suffering, He took its burden upon his shoulders. There is no deed, in times of hardship or ease, Greater than bearing the burdens of others. Be a burden-bearer, so that on the Day of Reckoning, You may find admittance into the House of Joy. When God Almighty saw, in his shepherding, His practice of kindness, He said to the cherubic holy angels, 'He whose character is this good, It is fitting if his rank is elevated, And he becomes an esteemed king in the world. They should give him leadership over the people, And show him the way to the realm of prophethood. All shall rest in his shadow, And like a shadow, they shall rub their heads at his feet.'
