English translation

That other point which was expressed By Shafi'i from the words of the people of guidance Was that from God, the Mighty and Majestic, Protection from sin became your portion from eternity So that whatever your heart desires out of self-will They do not give you the power over it Protection is this: that you have no silver and gold To become the object of your turbulent desires To bring a minstrel into the house of wine-drinking And embrace beautiful companions Protection is this: that you have no reach When your whim desires to harm someone To draw a sword and spill their blood To mingle their dust and blood together Protection is this: that you are not a master of the council Sitting pleasantly on a throne So that, in the hope of honor and rank, You turn a world's home to black smoke Protection is this: that like the city's police chief You do not have the power of coercion over everyone To falsely accuse a Muslim And exact a penalty through oppression Protection is this: that you are not a judge Who, when displeased with a master, Can trample his wealth by decree And make his blood lawful to others Protection is this: that from the office of public inspection You have no share in any matter So that you might use slander as an excuse To strike an innocent with a whip A hundred times this is protection, at every breath Though no one has awareness of it If I were to explain it, it would grow long And become terrifying to the people of secrets Do not make your heart heavy from what I said And do not harbor thoughts of indirect criticism against this or that person I, who am flawed from head to toe, How could my gaze fall upon the flaws of others? What business or burden do I myself have in the middle? There is another Agent other than me I am the tongue and He is the speaker Rather, I am the pen and He is the writer Do not look at realities with the eyes of the common people Do not view the letters and forms as coming from the tongue of the pen The pen received movement from the hand The hand is a captive in the grip of Power Power came as a follower to Will And that Will became actualized from Knowledge The Knowledge overflowing from the Bountiful Giver Whose emanation is free from accidents But that Knowledge is not voluntary Its overflowing is nothing but compelled When the overflowing Knowledge gave the verdict That writing is better than not writing The workers became its followers And words were written on every page Look at the head of this chain, where it is The movement of the rest arose from that head When the head moved, how is it possible That what is beyond the head remains still? If this writing does not please you, Break the pen and hold your breath Because the pen in writing these lines Is only the manifestation of the Scribe's action No other command is attached to the pen Why do you blame the pen unjustly? Whenever a strike falls upon a dog from a stick It is from the dog's ignorance to bite the stick The stick has no role in the middle There is no choice in the hand of the stick If the dog also bares its teeth There is the striker of the stick, happy and smiling In the grip of God's wrath, I am that stick That my strike may reach the dog-like ones If anyone harbors the thought of speech I am not in the middle; it is the Truth.
