The Allegory of the Heavy Stone and True Heroism in Jami's Haft Awrang

Overview

In Section 22 of Jami's Haft Awrang, the Prophet Muhammad encounters a group of youth testing their power by lifting a heavy stone. The Prophet uses this encounter to redefine heroism (pehlavani), shifting it from physical strength to the mastery over one's anger.

Key Themes

  • Physical vs. Spiritual Power: Physical wrestling and stone-lifting are presented as superficial displays of strength, whereas the ultimate test of power is the ability to suppress and conquer one's anger (khashm).
  • Conquering the Inner Giant: Anger is described as a terrifying mountain (kuh-e sahmgin). A true hero (pehlavan) is one who can bring this formidable internal force to the ground during moments of conflict.
