The Allegory of the Jurist's Turban in the Masnavi
In Book 4 of Jalaluddin Rumi's Masnavi, the tale of the jurist with the large turban serves as an allegory for hypocrisy and the deceptive nature of false appearances. The jurist intentionally wraps discarded rags inside his turban to make it appear massive and command respect from the public. When a thief snatches it in the dark and flees, the jurist simply calls out for him to unroll it, knowing the thief will only find worthless scraps. Through this narrative, Rumi illustrates how outward displays of piety, intellectualism, or social status frequently conceal an inner emptiness. The story functions as a warning to spiritual seekers not to be seduced by superficial facades, emphasizing that true worth is found in authentic inner substance rather than hollow, constructed exteriors.
