The Allegory of the Madman and the Dead Turk in Asrar Nameh

In Fariduddin Attar's 'Asrar Nameh', the tale of the religious madman and the dead Turk serves as an allegory criticizing blind adherence to religious rituals without genuine understanding. The madman observes a person reciting the Talqin (Islamic funerary instructions, traditionally delivered in Arabic) over the grave of a deceased Turk. The madman highlights the logical absurdity of this act, pointing out that if the Turk could not understand Arabic while he was alive and well, he certainly would not understand it while buried under the earth. Through the recurring archetype of the 'wise madman' (Deevaneh), Attar questions the efficacy of superficial religious formalism and emphasizes the necessity of true comprehension, inner sincerity, and spiritual awakening over rote, mechanical practices.
