In this section of Attar's Mosibat Nameh, the allegory focuses on a madman who flees from stone-throwing children into the palace of a high official (Amid). When the official mocks his miserable state, the madman observes that the official, who requires attendants just to swat away flies from his face, is far more helpless and captive. The tale illustrates the recurring Sufi theme that worldly power and reliance on others is a form of true captivity, whereas the socially outcast madman possesses a deeper understanding of human vulnerability and spiritual freedom.
