In this allegory from Farid al-Din Attar's Mosibat Nameh, a madman in Baghdad shatters all the glassware in a shop simply because he enjoys the clattering sound of the breaking glass, completely indifferent to the financial loss or profit. This story represents the Sufi concept of detachment from worldly wealth, rationality, and material calculations of gain and loss. By acting outside the boundaries of conventional sanity and economic logic, the madman exemplifies the spiritual state of being focused entirely on inner pleasure and divine experience, heedless of the material consequences that preoccupy ordinary minds.
