This allegory from Section 8 of Farid al-Din Attar's Mosibat Nameh tells the story of a madman found weeping in a ruin. When asked the reason for his tears, he explains that his heart has died and left him. The madman reveals that his heart's "death" was actually its departure towards God, driven by divine sorrow and longing. This tale illustrates the Sufi concept of spiritual detachment, where the ego or worldly heart perishes to be united with the divine presence, leaving the seeker in a state of profound, ecstatic bewilderment and yearning to follow.
