In this prose fable from Jami's Baharestan, a mouse lives for years in a grocer's shop, feasting freely on the dried fruits and nuts while the indulgent grocer overlooks its petty thefts. Once its appetite is fully sated, however, the emboldened mouse grows greedy and carries off the grocer's very purse. Recognizing the culprit, the grocer lies in wait like a cat, seizes the mouse, and binds a long cord to its foot to keep it under his control. The tale embodies the maxim quoted within it: when a base creature's belly is full it grows bold enough for a thousand mischiefs. It reads as an allegory for the lower soul (nafs), whose unchecked indulgence breeds a greed that overreaches and brings about its own capture and ruin.
