The Allegory of the Niche and Lamp in Asrar Nameh
In the Fourth Discourse of Attar's Asrar Nameh, the poet presents a mystical interpretation of the Quranic Verse of Light (Ayat al-Nur, 24:35) to illustrate the relationship between the human soul and the physical body.
Attar maps the components of the verse to the human constitution:
- The Niche (Mishkat) and Lamp (Mispah): Represent the physical body (tan), which acts as a structured container or cage for the inner light.
- The Glass (Zujajah) and Oil (Zayt): Represent the individual spirit and its potential for illumination, which is self-sufficient and ready to burn even without external fire (whose oil would almost glow even if untouched by fire).
Attar counsels the seeker to break the glass of bodily attachments and physical forms. By shattering the vessel of the material self, the soul's light is freed to unite with the celestial star (kawkab-e durri), transcending the dualities of East and West, and achieving direct proximity to the divine source.
