In Section 6 of Attar's Mosibat Nameh, the poet uses the imagery of applying precious ghaliyeh (perfume) to a donkey's tail to symbolize the depth of human spiritual ignorance. Attar asserts that most people's knowledge of the Divine is as misplaced and unperceptive as a donkey's awareness of the scent of fine musk. The allegory warns that one must connect the 'branch' of their individual essence back to the 'root' of the Divine Source while alive, or risk remaining eternally severed upon death.
