The Anagrammatic Unity of Poetry, the Divine Throne, and Islamic Law in Mosibat Nameh

In Section 22 of the Mosibat Nameh, Attar of Nishapur employs a striking linguistic device to elevate the status of poetry. He highlights that the Arabic/Persian words for Poetry (شعر, she'r), the Divine Throne (عرش, 'arsh), and Islamic Law (شرع, shar') are anagrams composed of the exact same three letters (ش, ع, ر). Based on this shared morphological root, Attar posits that they share a unified divine origin and essence. This poetic wordplay is used to argue that poetry is not merely a secular art form, but a sacred endeavor inherently connected to religious and cosmic truths.
