The Basmala as an Expression of Divine Reliance in Jami's Haft Awrang

The Basmala and reliance

Jami presents the invocation 'In the name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful' as the proper beginning of speech and spiritual action. Through images of a generous banquet, nourishing fragrance, and protection from demonic interference, the poem treats the Basmala as more than a verbal formula: it expresses dependence upon divine generosity and guardianship.

This opening establishes a practical form of tawakkul, or trust in God, that prepares readers for Jami's later, more explicit discussions of reliance upon the divine provider rather than worldly causes.
