In Chapter 35, Poem 34 of Attar's Mokhtar Nameh, the beloved is metaphorically described as the 'pupil of the eye' (مردم چشم). The poem asserts that all vision is completely dependent on the presence of the beloved. Just as the physical eye cannot function without its pupil, the spiritual seeker is rendered blind to the world and loses all capacity for sight when the divine beloved departs.
