The Boundless Ocean of Secrets in Attar's Asrar Nameh
In the Tenth Discourse of the Asrar Nameh, Farid al-Din Attar introduces the metaphor of the "boundless ocean of secrets" (دریای بی پایان اسرار) to represent the infinite and unfathomable nature of Divine Reality. He describes this spiritual ocean as having neither a visible surface nor a bottom, filled with countless wonders that transcend human comprehension. Attar uses this imagery to illustrate that diving into these divine mysteries fundamentally transforms the seeker, taking them beyond conventional earthly categories (such as being a "believer" or a "Christian") and demonstrating that ultimate truths are beyond the grasp of ordinary language and intellect.
