Case Study

The Central Planner's Computer

A government leader proposes a new system to manage the national economy. Using advanced supercomputers, the system will track every citizen's skills, every business's resources, and every consumer's needs in real-time. The goal is to centrally calculate and dictate what is produced, who performs which job, and how all goods and income are distributed to create a perfectly efficient and fair society. Based on the fundamental nature of economic activity, evaluate this proposal and explain the primary reason it is likely to fail.
