The Compass Metaphor and the Futility of Cosmic Longing in Attar's Mokhtar Nameh (Chapter 31, Poem 45)

In Chapter 31, Poem 45 of Attar's Mokhtar Nameh, the poet uses the metaphor of a compass (پرگار) to describe the celestial sphere's perpetual rotation. Despite spinning incessantly out of profound longing (شوق), the heavens remain bewildered and anchored in one place, rendering their physical movement seemingly futile. This imagery highlights the paradox of cosmic yearning, where constant, dizzying motion does not equate to spatial progression or arrival at the divine destination.
