In Sufi ethical philosophy, particularly articulated by Sana'i in Hadiqat al-Haqiqah, giving counsel or advice (pand or nasihah) is only spiritually beneficial and transformative if it is completely disinterested (bi-gharaz). Sana'i contrasts selfless advice with self-interested advice, stating that advice free from personal motives acts as sweet nourishment ('like sugar'), whereas advice colored by self-interest or personal agendas becomes a shackle (pay-band) that binds both the advisor and the recipient to worldly desires.
