The Concept of Spiritual Marriage (نکاح معنوی) in Golshan-e Raz
In Mahmud Shabestari's Golshan-e Raz, the concept of 'Spiritual Marriage' (نکاح معنوی) serves as a metaphysical allegory for the harmonious union of the spiritual and material realms, such as the synthesis of body and soul, or form and meaning. As described in Section 42, when the natural elements reach an equitable balance, the Rational Soul is drawn to this harmony. This initiates a spiritual marriage in which the Universal Soul provides the dowry. From this mystical union emerge human perfections, including eloquence, the sciences, ethical virtues, and spiritual beauty.
