### Concept of Spiritual Vision and Eternal Presence
In Rumi's Masnavi, specifically in the story of the Sheikh who does not mourn the death of his children, Rumi introduces the mystical concept of spiritual vision (shuhud). 

Rather than viewing death as absolute separation or non-existence, the perfected spiritual guide perceives souls as eternally alive and present in the Divine light. From this elevated mystical perspective, physical mourning is seen as a limitation of physical senses, whereas spiritual realization reveals that nothing is truly lost, leading to absolute contentment (rida) and peace in the face of external loss.

چون پیمبر درمیان امتان 
در گشای روضهٔ دار الجنان
گفت پیغامبر که شیخ رفته پیش

یک صباحی گفتش اهل بیت او 
سخت دل چونی بگو ای نیک خو
ما ز مرگ و هجر فرزندان تو 
نوحه می داریم با پشت دوتو
تو نمی گریی نمی زاری چرا 
یا که رحمت نیست در دل ای کیا
چون تورا رحمی نباشد در درون 
پس چه اومیدست مان از تو کنون
ما باومید تویم ای پیشوا 
که بنگذاری تو ما را در فنا
چون بیارایند روز حشر تخت 
خود شفیع ما توی آن روز سخت
در چنان روز و شب بی زینهار 
ما به اکرام تویم اومیدوار
دست ما و دامن تست آن زمان 
که نماند هیچ مجرم را امان

کی گذارم مجرمان را اشک ریز
من شفیع عاصیان باشم بجان 
تا رهانمشان ز اشکنجهٔ گران
عاصیان واهل کبایر را بجهد 
وا رهانم از عتاب نقض عهد
صالحان امتم خود فارغ اند 
از شفاعتهای من روز گزند
بلک ایشان را شفاعتها بود 
گفتشان چون حکم نافذ می رود
هیچ وازر وزر غیری بر نداشت 
من نیم وازر خدایم بر فراشت
آنک بی وزرست شیخست ای جوان 
در قبول حق چو اندر کف کمان
شیخ کی بد پیر یعنی مو سپید 
معنی این مو بدان ای کژ امید
هست آن موی سیه هستی او 
تا ز هستی اش نماند تای مو
چونک هستی اش نماند پیر اوست 
گر سیه مو باشد او یا خود دوموست
هست آن موی سیه وصف بشر 
نیست آن مو موی ریش و موی سر
عیسی اندر مهد بر دارد نفیر 
که جوان ناگشته ما شیخیم و پیر
گر رهید از بعض اوصاف بشر 
شیخ نبود کهل باشد ای پسر
چون یکی موی سیه کان وصف ماست 
نیست بر وی شیخ و مقبول خداست
چون بود مویش سپید ار با خودست 
او نه پیرست و نه خاص ایزدست
ور سر مویی ز وصفش باقیست 
او نه از عرش است او آفاقیست

There was once a sheikh, a guide, before this: a heavenly candle upon the face of the earth, like a prophet among communities, opening the gate of the garden of the Abode of Paradise. The Prophet said, “The sheikh who has gone ahead is like a prophet among his own people.” One morning his household said to him: “Tell us, O good-natured one, how are you so hard-hearted? We are mourning, bent double, over the death and separation of your children. Why do you neither weep nor wail? Or is there no mercy in your heart, O lord? If you have no mercy within, what hope can we now have from you? We have our hope in you, O leader, that you will not leave us in annihilation. When they adorn the throne on the Day of Resurrection, you yourself will be our intercessor on that hard day. On such a day and night without protection, we hope in the honor shown to you. Our hand will be on your skirt then, when no sinner has any safety left.” The Prophet said: “On the Day of Resurrection, how could I leave sinners tearful? I shall be the intercessor of the disobedient with my soul, so that I may free them from heavy torment. With effort I shall free the disobedient and those guilty of major sins from the rebuke for breaking the covenant. The righteous of my community are themselves free of my intercessions on the day of harm. Rather, they themselves will have intercessions; their speech proceeds like an effective decree.” He said to them: “No bearer of a burden has taken up another’s burden. I am not a bearer of burdens; God has exalted me. The one who is without burden is the sheikh, O youth, accepted by God like a bow in the hand. Who is the sheikh? Pir means ‘white-haired’: learn the meaning of this hair, O crooked in hope. That black hair is his existence, until not even a hair-tip of his existence remains. When his existence is gone, he is the Pir, whether his hair is black or whether he has only two hairs. That black hair is the attribute of being human; that hair is not the hair of beard or head. شیخ گفت او را مپندار ای رفیق 
که ندارم رحم و مهر و دل شفیق
بر همه کفار ما را رحمتست 
گرچه جان جمله کافر نعمتست
بر سگانم رحمت و بخشایش است 
که چرا از سنگهاشان مالش است
آن سگی که می گزد گویم دعا 
که ازین خو وا رهانش ای خدا
این سگان را هم در آن اندیشه دار 
که نباشند از خلایق سنگسار
زان بیاورد اولیا را بر زمین 
تا کندشان رحمة للعالمین
خلق را خواند سوی درگاه خاص 
حق را خواند که وافر کن خلاص
جهد بنماید ازین سو بهر پند

نه از عیان و وحی تاییدی بود
گفت پس چون رحم داری بر همه 
همچو چوپانی به گرد این رمه
چون نداری نوحه بر فرزند خویش 
چونک فصاد اجلشان زد به نیش
چون گواه رحم اشک دیده هاست 
دیدهٔ تو بی نم و گریه چراست
رو به زن کرد و بگفتش ای عجوز 
خود نباشد فصل دی همچون تموز
جمله گر مردند ایشان، گر حی اند 
غایب و پنهان ز چشم دل کی اند
من چو بینمشان معین پیش خویش 
از چه رو، رو را کنم همچون تو ریش
گرچه بیرون اند از دور زمان 
با من اند و گرد من بازی کنان
گریه از هجران بود یا از فراق 
با عزیزانم وصالست و عناق
خلق اندر خواب می بینندشان 
من به بیداری همی بینم عیان
زین جهان خود را دمی پنهان کنم 
برگ حس را از درخت افشان کنم
حس اسیر عقل باشد ای فلان 
عقل اسیر روح باشد هم بدان
دست بستهٔ عقل را جان باز کرد 
کارهای بسته را هم ساز کرد
حسها و اندیشه بر آب صفا 
همچو خس بگرفته روی آب را
دست عقل، آن خس به یکسو می برد 
آب پیدا می شود پیش خرد
خس بس انبه بود بر جو چون حباب 
خس چو یکسو رفت پیدا گشت آب
چونک دست عقل نگشاید خدا 
خس فزاید از هوا بر آب ما
آب را هر دم کند پوشیده او 
آن هوا خندان و گریان عقل تو
چونک تقوی بست دو دست هوا 
حق گشاید هر دو دست عقل را
پس حواس چیره محکوم تو شد 
چون خرد سالار و مخدوم تو شد
حس را بی خواب، خواب اندر کند 
تا که غیبیها ز جان سر بر زند
هم به بیداری ببینی خوابها 
هم ز گردون برگشاید بابها

## English translation
The Sheikh said: Do not imagine, O friend,
That I lack compassion, love, and a tender heart.
I have compassion even for all unbelievers,
Though the souls of all are ungrateful for blessings.
I have mercy and forgiveness even for dogs —
Why must they suffer blows from stones?
For the dog that bites I pray:
"Deliver him from this habit, O God."
Keep these dogs also in that care,
That they not be stoned by the people.
For this reason He brought the saints (awliya) to earth,
To make them a mercy to all the worlds (rahmatan lil-'alamin).
He calls creation toward the special threshold;
He calls upon the Truth (Haqq): "Grant full salvation."
He strives from this side for admonition;
When it avails not, he says: "O God, do not close the door."
Partial mercy is for the common people;
Total mercy belongs to the great.
His partial mercy has joined the whole;
The mercy of the sea is the guide of paths.
When partial mercy is joined to the whole,
See the mercy of the totality as guide and proceed.
As long as it remains partial, it does not know the way to the sea;
It mistakes every pond for the sea by resemblance.
When it does not know the way to the ocean, how will it lead?
How will it bring the people to the sea?
When it becomes connected to the sea, then it leads
The way to the sea like a torrent and a stream.
If it calls others, it is by imitation —
Not a confirmation from direct vision and revelation.
He said: Then since you have mercy on
