Book Three - Section 79 - The Sheikh's Excuse for Not Weeping Over His Children

Original content

English translation

The Sheikh said: Do not imagine, O friend, That I lack compassion, love, and a tender heart. I have compassion even for all unbelievers, Though the souls of all are ungrateful for blessings. I have mercy and forgiveness even for dogs — Why must they suffer blows from stones? For the dog that bites I pray: "Deliver him from this habit, O God." Keep these dogs also in that care, That they not be stoned by the people. For this reason He brought the saints (awliya) to earth, To make them a mercy to all the worlds (rahmatan lil-'alamin). He calls creation toward the special threshold; He calls upon the Truth (Haqq): "Grant full salvation." He strives from this side for admonition; When it avails not, he says: "O God, do not close the door." Partial mercy is for the common people; Total mercy belongs to the great. His partial mercy has joined the whole; The mercy of the sea is the guide of paths. When partial mercy is joined to the whole, See the mercy of the totality as guide and proceed. As long as it remains partial, it does not know the way to the sea; It mistakes every pond for the sea by resemblance. When it does not know the way to the ocean, how will it lead? How will it bring the people to the sea? When it becomes connected to the sea, then it leads The way to the sea like a torrent and a stream. If it calls others, it is by imitation — Not a confirmation from direct vision and revelation. He said: Then since you have mercy on all, Like a shepherd around this flock — Why do you not lament for your own children, When the lancet of their appointed time (ajal) struck its vein? Since tears of the eyes are the witness of compassion, Why are your eyes without moisture and weeping? He turned to the woman and said: O old woman, The winter season is not like summer. Whether they have all died or are still living, When are they absent and hidden from the eye of the heart? When I see them clearly before me, For what reason should I lacerate my face as you do? Though they are outside the cycle of time, They are with me and playing around me. Weeping comes from separation or from parting; With my dear ones I have union and embrace. People see them in sleep; I see them openly in waking. I hide myself from this world for a moment, I shake the leaves of sense from the tree. Sense is the prisoner of intellect, O such a one; Know also that intellect is the prisoner of spirit. The soul freed the bound hands of intellect And arranged the locked affairs as well. Senses and thoughts upon the water of purity (safa) Have covered the surface of the water like chaff. The hand of intellect sweeps that chaff to one side; The water becomes visible before wisdom. The chaff was very dense on the stream like bubbles; When the chaff moved aside, the water appeared. When God does not open the hand of intellect, The chaff multiplies from caprice (hawa) upon our water. At every moment it covers the water — That caprice laughing, and your intellect weeping. When piety (taqwa) binds the two hands of caprice, The Truth (Haqq) opens both hands of intellect. Then the once-dominant senses become subject to you, When intellect became your commander and master. He puts sense to sleep without sleep, So that hidden things rise up from the soul. In wakefulness too you will see visions, And from the heavens doors will be opened.
