English translation

You have read the story of the people of Darwan; why, then, are you still caught up in seeking stratagems? They were scheming out of their treachery to take something from the provision of some dervishes. All night long they pondered deceit, face to face, many an Amr and Bakr. In secret each told secrets to the other, as though God must not find them out. Clay schemed against the clay-shaper; the hand tries to do a deed hidden from the heart. He said: Does He who created not know your desire, whether in your private talk there is sincerity or flattery? He said: Is He heedless of a traveler who has set out, He who sees where his lodging will be tomorrow? Wherever he has descended or ascended, He has watched over him and counted all. Now cleanse the ear of heedlessness; listen to the sorrowful one's tale of separation. Count that as alms given to the grieving one, when you set your ear before his tale. You will hear the griefs of the heart-sick, the noble soul's want within water and clay. He has a smoke-filled house, full of affliction; through listening, open a window for him. When your ear becomes a breathing passage for him, the bitter smoke in his house will lessen. Share grief with us, O you who are going, if you are going toward the Lord Most High. This wavering is confinement and prison, which will not let the soul go in one direction. This pulls this way, that pulls that way; each says, I am the path of guidance. This wavering is a pass on the road of Truth; blessed is the one whose foot is free. Without wavering he goes on the straight road; if you do not know the road, seek where his footprint is. Take the gazelle's track and go unharmed, until from the gazelle's track you reach the musk-navel. By this way you ascend to the luminous height, brother, even if you are going through fire. Fear neither the sea nor wave and foam, since you have heard the address Do not fear. Understand Do not fear thus: when God has given you fear, He sends bread as He has sent you the tray. Fear belongs to the one who has no fear; grief belongs to the one who has no circling devotion here.
