اندر آن وادی گروهی از عرب
خشک شد از قحط بارانشان قرب

در میان آن بیابان مانده
کاروانی مرگ خود بر خوانده

ناگهانی آن مغیث هر دو کون
مصطفی پیدا شد از ره بهر عون

دید آنجا کاروانی بس بزرگ
بر تف ریگ و ره صعب و سترگ

اشترانشان را زبان آویخته
خلق اندر ریگ هر سو ریخته

رحمش آمد گفت هین زوتر روید
چند یاری سوی آن کثبان دوید

گر سیاهی بر شتر مشک آورد
سوی میر خود به زودی می‌برد

آن شتربان سیه را با شتر
سوی من آرید با فرمان مر

سوی کثبان آمدند آن طالبان
بعد یکساعت بدیدند آنچنان

بنده‌ای می‌شد سیه با اشتری
راویه پر آب چون هدیه‌بری

پس بدو گفتند می‌خواند ترا
این طرف فخر البشر خیر الوری

گفت من نشناسم او را کیست او
گفت او آن ماه‌روی قندخو

نوعها تعریف کردندش که هست
گفت مانا او مگر آن شاعرست

که گروهی را زبون کرد او بسحر
من نیایم جانب او نیم شبر

کش‌کشانش آوریدند آن طرف
او فغان برداشت در تشنیع و تف

چون کشیدندش به پیش آن عزیز
گفت نوشید آب و بردارید نیز

جمله را زان مشک او سیراب کرد
اشتران و هر کسی زان آب خورد

راویه پر کرد و مشک از مشک او
ابر گردون خیره ماند از رشک او

این کسی دیدست کز یک راویه
سرد گردد سوز چندان هاویه

این کسی دیدست کز یک مشک آب
گشت چندین مشک پر بی اضطراب

مشک خود روپوش بود و موج فضل
می‌رسید از امر او از بحر اصل

آب از جوشش همی‌گردد هوا
و آن هوا گردد ز سردی آبها

بلک بی علت و بیرون زین حکم
آب رویانید تکوین از عدم

تو ز طفلی چون سببها دیده‌ای
در سبب از جهل بر چفسیده‌ای

با سببها از مسبب غافلی
سوی این روپوشها زان مایلی

چون سببها رفت بر سر می‌زنی
ربنا و ربناها می‌کنی

رب می‌گوید برو سوی سبب
چون ز صنعم یاد کردی ای عجب

گفت زین پس من ترا بینم همه
ننگرم سوی سبب و آن دمدمه

گویدش ردوا لعادوا کار تست
ای تو اندر توبه و میثاق سست

لیک من آن ننگرم رحمت کنم
رحمتم پرست بر رحمت تنم

ننگرم عهد بدت بدهم عطا
از کرم این دم چو می‌خوانی مرا

قافله حیران شد اندر کار او
یا محمد چیست این ای بحر خو

کرده‌ای روپوش مشک خرد را
غرقه کردی هم عرب هم کرد را

English translation

In that valley, a group of Arabs —\nTheir water-skins had dried up from the drought of rain.\n\nStranded in the midst of that desert,\nA caravan that had resigned itself to death.\n\nSuddenly, that Succorer of both worlds,\nMuṣṭafā appeared on the road to give aid.\n\nHe saw there a very great caravan\nOn the blazing sand, the road harsh and formidable.\n\nTheir camels with tongues hanging out,\nThe people scattered in the sand in every direction.\n\nCompassion seized him; he said, "Quick, hurry —\nA few of you companions, run toward those sand dunes!\n\nIf a dark-skinned man brings a water-skin on a camel,\nAnd is taking it quickly to his chieftain,\n\nBring that dark camel-driver with his camel\nTo me — this is a firm command."\n\nThe seekers came toward the sand dunes;\nAfter an hour they saw just such a thing:\n\nA dark-skinned slave was making his way with a camel,\nA water-vessel full of water, as if bearing a gift.\n\nThen they said to him, "He is calling for you —\nThis way — the Pride of Humanity, the Best of Creation."\n\nHe said, "I do not know him — who is he?"\nThey said, "He is that moon-faced, sweet-natured one."\n\nThey praised and described him in many ways;\nHe said, "It seems he must be that poet\n\nWho subdued a people through sorcery —\nI will not come toward him even half a span!"\n\nDragging and pulling him, they brought him that way;\nHe raised an outcry of protest and rage.\n\nWhen they drew him before that Beloved One,\nHe said, "Drink the water, and take more as well."\n\nHe quenched all of them from that water-skin of his;\nThe camels and every person drank from that water.\n\nHe filled the water-vessel and the water-skins from his water-skin;\nThe cloud of the firmament stood bewildered with envy of him.\n\nHas anyone seen this — that from one water-vessel\nThe burning of so great a Hāwiya is cooled?\n\nHas anyone seen this — that from one water-skin\nSo many water-skins were filled without perturbation?\n\nThe water-skin itself was but a veil, and waves of grace\nWere arriving by his command from the Original Sea.\n\nWater from boiling turns into vapor,\nAnd that vapor from coldness turns back into waters.\n\nBut rather — without cause and beyond this law —\nThe divine Origination caused water to spring from non-existence.\n\nSince from childhood you have seen causes,\nYou have, out of ignorance, clung fast to cause.\n\nWith causes, you are heedless of the Causer of causes;\nYou are inclined toward these veils.\n\nWhen causes are gone, you beat your head,\nCrying "Our Lord! Our Lord!" over and over.\n\nThe Lord says, "Go toward the cause —\nHow wonderful, that you remembered my craft!"\n\nHe says, "From now on I will see only You,\nI will not look toward cause and that vain fancy."\n\nHe says to him, "Ruddū la-ʿādū — that is your habit,\nO you who are weak in repentance and covenant!\n\nBut I do not regard that — I show mercy;\nMy mercy is brimful; mercy is the body I wear.\n\nI do not regard your broken covenant — I give gifts;\nOut of generosity at this moment, since you call upon me."\n\nThe caravan was bewildered at his work:\n"O Muḥammad, what is this? O you of ocean nature!\n\nYou have made the small water-skin a veil —\nYou have drowned both Arab and Kurd alike!"
