دفتر سوم - بخش ۱۳۲ - حکایت نذر کردن سگان هر زمستان کی این تابستان چون بیاید خانه سازیم از بهر زمستان را / Book Three — Section 132 — The Story of the Dogs Vowing Every Winter That When Summer Comes We Will Build a House for the Sake of Winter

Original content

English translation

In winter the dog's bones draw close and huddle together; The wound of cold diminishes him to such a state That he says: "This body of mine being so slight, I must build myself a house of stone. When summer comes, I will seize the moment And build a house of stone against the cold."

When summer comes with its ease and expansion, The bones spread wide and the skin grows glad. He says, seeing himself grown large and fat: "In what house could I ever fit, O lord?" He grows fat, draws his paw into some shade — Laziness, satiety, pride, self-willfulness.

His heart says to him: "Build a house, uncle!" He answers: "Tell me — in what house would I fit?"

The bones of your greed, in the hour of pain, Crush together, grow small, roll themselves up. You say: "From repentance I will build a house; In winter it will be my threshold and shelter." When the pain departs and that fat greed returns with force, Like the dog, the scheme of the house leaves you.

Gratitude for blessing is sweeter than the blessing itself; The one devoted to gratitude — when does he go chasing after blessings? Gratitude is the soul of blessing, and blessing is but the skin, For gratitude brings you to the very lane of the Beloved. Blessing brings heedlessness, and gratitude brings awakening; Hunt blessing with the King's trap of gratitude. The blessing of your gratitude fills your eyes and makes you a lord (mīr), So that you bestow a hundred blessings in sacrifice upon the poor. You drink your fill of the food and sweetmeats of the Real (Ḥaqq), Until belly-craving and the wasting sickness depart from you.
