Original content

English translation

From Anas son of Mālik it has come That a certain person came as his guest. He related that after the meal Anas saw the tablecloth had turned yellow, Dirty and soiled. He said, "O maidservant, Cast it into the oven for a moment." She wisely cast the tablecloth Into the oven full of fire at that moment. All the guests were bewildered by this, Awaiting the smoke of its burning. After an hour she brought it out from the oven, Clean and white, and freed from all that filth. The people said, "O dear Companion, How did it not burn, and become purified as well?" He said, "Because Muṣṭafā wiped his hands and mouth Many times on this tablecloth." O heart fearful of fire and torment, Draw near to such a hand and such lips. Since He gave such honor to an inanimate thing, What will He open up for the soul of the lover? Since He made the clay-brick of the Kaʿba a qibla, Be the dust of the saints, O soul, in the struggle. After that they said to the maidservant, "Will you not tell your own state amid all this? How did you so quickly cast it at his word? I grant that he was following the trail of mysteries — Such a precious tablecloth, How did you cast it into the fire, O lady?" She said, "I have trust in the generous ones; I do not despair of their honor. What is a garment? If he were to say to me, 'Go into the very heart of fire, without regret' — I would leap in from the perfection of trust. I have great hope from the servants of God. I would cast my head, not just this tablecloth, Out of trust in every generous knower of secrets." O brother, apply yourself to this elixir — The sincerity of a man should not be less than that of a woman. That manly heart which is less than a woman's Is a heart that is less than a belly.
