چون بلال از ضعف شد همچون هلال
رنگ مرگ افتاد بر روی بلال

جفت او دیدش بگفتا وا حرب
پس بلالش گفت نه نه وا طرب

تا کنون اندر حرب بودم ز زیست
تو چه دانی مرگ چون عیشست و چیست

این همی گفت و رخش در عین گفت
نرگس و گلبرگ و لاله می‌شکفت

تاب رو و چشم پر انوار او
می گواهی داد بر گفتار او

هر سیه دل می سیه دیدی ورا
مردم دیده سیاه آمد چرا

مردم نادیده باشد رو سیاه
مردم دیده بود مرآت ماه

خود کی بیند مردم دیدهٔ ترا
در جهان جز مردم دیده‌فزا

چون به غیر مردم دیده‌ش ندید
پس به غیر او کی در رنگش رسید

پس جز او جمله مقلد آمدند
در صفات مردم دیده بلند

گفت جفتش الفراق ای خوش‌خصال
گفت نه نه الوصالست الوصال

گفت جفت امشب غریبی می‌روی
از تبار و خویش غایب می‌شوی

گفت نه نه بلک امشب جان من
می‌رسد خود از غریبی در وطن

گفت رویت را کجا بینیم ما
گفت اندر حلقهٔ خاص خدا

حلقهٔ خاصش به تو پیوسته است
گر نظر بالا کنی نه سوی پست

اندر آن حلقه ز رب العالمین
نور می‌تابد چو در حلقه نگین

گفت ویران گشت این خانه دریغ
گفت اندر مه نگر منگر به میغ

کرد ویران تا کند معمورتر
قومم انبه بود و خانه مختصر

English translation

The Death of Bilāl, May God Be Pleased with Him (Raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhu), in Joy

When Bilāl from weakness became like the crescent moon, The color of death fell upon Bilāl's face. His spouse saw him and said, "Wā ḥarb — oh, what grief!" Then Bilāl said to her, "No, no — wā ṭarab — oh, what joy!" "Until now I was in torment from living; What do you know of what death is and how it is like bliss?" He was saying this, and in the very act of speaking his face Bloomed with narcissus and rose-petal and tulip. The radiance of his face and his eyes full of lights Were bearing witness to his words. Every dark-hearted one would see him as dark — Why has the pupil of the eye come to be black? The unseen pupil is dark-faced, The seen pupil is the mirror of the moon. Who in the world can see the pupil of your eye Except a pupil-illuminating one? Since none other than the pupil saw him, Who other than it reached his true color? So all others were mere imitators In the qualities of the lofty, discerning one. His spouse said, "Al-firāq — parting, O fair-natured one!" He said, "No, no — al-wiṣāl — it is union, union!" His spouse said, "Tonight you go as a stranger, Departing absent from kin and family." He said, "No, no — rather tonight my soul Itself arrives from exile into the homeland." She said, "Where shall we see your face?" He said, "In the intimate circle (ḥalqa) of God." His intimate circle is joined to you, If you look upward and not toward the low. In that circle, from the Lord of the Worlds (Rabb al-ʿĀlamīn), Light shines like a gem set in a ring. She said, "Alas, this house has been ruined!" He said, "Look at the moon, do not look at the cloud." He ruined it to make it more flourishing — My people were many and the house was small.
