Bilal's Joyful Embrace of Death in the Masnavi
In Book Three of the Masnavi, Rumi uses the story of Bilal's passing to illustrate the Sufi concept of death as a joyful transition. As Bilal lies on his deathbed, his wife laments his impending passing. Bilal, however, corrects her, expressing profound joy rather than sorrow. He describes his earthly life as a harsh battle and anticipates death as an ecstatic reunion with the divine Beloved. Through this narrative, Rumi reinforces the central teaching that for the spiritually awakened, physical death is not a tragic end, but a beautiful awakening and liberation from the confines of the material world.
