The Concept of the Valley of Bewilderment (Heyrat) in The Conference of the Birds
In Farid al-Din Attar's The Conference of the Birds, the Valley of Bewilderment (Wadi-ye Heyrat) is the sixth of the seven valleys the birds must traverse. It represents a state of profound astonishment and confusion where the spiritual seeker is completely overwhelmed by the majesty and incomprehensibility of the Divine. In this valley, all previous knowledge, reason, and even spiritual certainty are shattered. The pilgrim realizes they know absolutely nothing, standing in awe and perplexity while blinded by the dazzling light of divine reality. This complete loss of intellectual bearings and ego prepares the soul for the final stage of annihilation.
