In Section 3 of Hujwiri's Kashf al-Mahjub, the nature of Sufism (tasawwuf) is defined through the sayings of early masters. Abu Hafs Haddad al-Nishaburi holds that Sufism is entirely adab (spiritual manners): every moment (waqt), station (maqam), and state (hal) has its own proper conduct. Whoever adheres to the manners of the moments attains the rank of the true men, while whoever neglects these manners is kept far from nearness even as he imagines closeness, and is rejected even as he presumes acceptance. Abu'l-Hasan Nuri echoes this, teaching that Sufism is neither outward forms (rusum) nor sciences (ulum) but rather ethical character (akhlaq). The excerpt thus frames Sufism not as doctrine or ritual form but as a disciplined ethics of the soul.
