In Book Five, Section 49 of the Masnavi, Rumi provides a profound theological and philosophical definition of justice ('adl) and injustice/oppression (zulm). Rather than defining them in conventional social or legalistic terms, Rumi defines them through the concept of proper placement:

• Justice ('adl): Giving water to trees (putting a blessing or resource in its rightful and productive place where it can bear fruit).
• Injustice (zulm): Giving water to thorns (placing a resource in an improper, unworthy, or harmful place where it leads only to trouble).

This allegory teaches that true justice lies in discernment and alignment with spiritual truth, ensuring that divine blessings, intellectual energy, and focus are directed toward the spirit and intellect rather than worldly desires and distractions.
