The Distinction Between Physical and Spiritual Medicine in the Masnavi
In the Masnavi, Rumi draws a sharp contrast between the diagnostic methods and capabilities of physical physicians (طبیبان بدن) and spiritual or divine physicians (طبیبان الهی). While physical doctors rely on observable bodily signs like pulse, complexion, and urine to treat somatic diseases, they remain blind to internal emotional and spiritual afflictions. In contrast, the divine physician diagnoses through spiritual insight (کشف), recognizing that ailments of the soul—such as lovesickness—cannot be cured with worldly drugs. This distinction highlights Rumi's broader philosophical theme that spiritual illnesses require the guidance of a spiritual master who perceives the unseen state of the heart.
