The Doctrine of Satiety as the Seed of Forbearance and Eating at Home in Section 9 of Jami's Baharestan
In Section 9 of the second garden (rowze) of Jami's Baharestan, a sage counsels his son never to leave the house in the morning before eating, because satiety (سیری) is the seed of forbearance (حلم) and patience, whereas hunger breeds mental dryness (خشک مغزی) and levity (سبکساری). The passage tempers ascetic zeal: one should not darken one's temperament with fasting, and when fasting turns into torment, breaking it is better than keeping it. It further urges contentment with whatever food one has at home — eating one's fill of it — so as not to covet the food of others or beg favors from base people, since a hungry person craves every dish he sees and grows greedy toward his companions. The section thus teaches measured eating as a safeguard of both moral equanimity and social self-sufficiency, offering a notable counterpoint to the surrounding Baharestan passages that praise hunger and condemn preoccupation with food.
