• Preparation – break down paragraphs into phrases/sentences or pages into paragraphs/sections
• Review reading strategies – review decoding strategies
• Chunk the text – teachers break up text or have students do it themselves
• Paraphrase meaning – students rewrite each chunk in their own words
• Assessment and sharing – test comprehension or compare original vs. paraphrased text
