The Enclosure Movement

The legal process in England during the 18th and 19th centuries of enclosing small landholdings to create larger farms. This process involved converting common land and open-field systems into privately owned, fenced-in fields. While enclosure increased agricultural efficiency, it also displaced many rural families, creating a landless workforce that migrated to urban areas in search of industrial employment.
