The Ephemeral Nature of the World in the Tale of the Dust Board

In Attar's Conference of the Birds, the tale of the man drawing the heavens on a board of dust serves as an allegory for the ephemeral and illusory nature of the physical world. Just as the intricate astrological drawings and horoscopes are easily wiped away by shaking the dust, the complex forms and events of the world lack permanence and are ultimately reduced to nothingness.
